Chapter 6: Favorite Food

On Monday morning I went to work, because I had student loans to pay and a full schedule of cleanings.

I worked at a family dental practice on the first floor of a brick building, with a waiting room that held a dozen chairs and a fish tank.

By nine-fifteen, most of the chairs were full.

I was between patients, rinsing an instrument tray, when the front desk coordinator leaned into the back hall with her eyebrows up.

"Willa," she whispered. "He's here."

"Who?"

"Your Corin."

I dried my hands on my scrub top and walked out to the front.

He stood at the desk in a clean shirt, with a bunch of yellow tulips in one fist and a steel thermos in the other.

His eyes were bruised from no sleep.

"I know," he said, before I had said anything. "You told me not to come to your work. I tried writing it down, and every version was wrong. I needed to see you."

Nine patients had stopped pretending to read.

An older man by the fish tank lowered his magazine.

"Corin, outside," I said.

"Please. Just give me two minutes. I'll say it here." His voice shook. "I was wrong. I did it without thinking, and it hurt you. I'll stop. I'll do whatever you tell me."

He held out the tulips.

I did not take them.

"What's my favorite flower?" I asked.
