Chapter 14: Come Home
I didn't sleep much on Friday.
I sat at my father's kitchen table until one in the morning with the photo albums.
My mother at the steam box, laughing, with her hair tied up in a bandana.
My mother holding me on the bow of somebody's runabout, both of us squinting.
Coby sat across from me and turned the pages when I couldn't.
"You look like her," he said.
"Everybody says that."
"No, I mean you make the same face. When you're about to argue."
"I'm not about to argue."
"You're making it right now."
On Saturday morning my father took him to the hardware store in Holland for sandpaper, which takes my father three hours, because he has to talk to everybody.
Cullen had gone to Grand Haven for bronze screws.
So I was alone in the yard, scraping glue off a bench, when a black Audi pulled in through the gate.
The camera sent the picture to my phone before he even got out.
Jarrod.
Alone.
No Kiersten in the passenger seat. No phone in his hand, for once.
He walked across the gravel in loafers, carefully.
"Hi," he said.
"Coby's not here."
"I know. I came to see you."
He looked around at the sheds, the river, the Wilhelmina's bow through the big doors.
"I forgot how quiet it is out here."
"It's not quiet. You just never listened."
He let that go, which was new.
"Can we sit down?"
I pointed at the bench I'd been scraping.
He sat on it, in his good trousers, and I stayed standing.
"I've been thinking," he said. "About all of it. The birthday. The phone. I know I've been distracted."
