Chapter 17: Alibi
"That's her car," I said.
"That's her car," Cullen said.
My father lifted his face out of his hands.
He looked at the phone for a long time without his glasses.
Then he put them on and looked again.
"Five minutes," he said. "She sat at my gate five minutes before my shed went up."
Two Saugatuck police officers came at seven.
A fire investigator came at eight, in a white truck with a ladder on the roof.
He walked the black pile in rubber boots for an hour with a long steel bar.
"Your boiler was cold," he said. "When did you shut it down?"
"Six," I said. "Like always."
"It didn't start inside. It started outside, low on the river wall." He wiped his hands on a rag. "And it had help."
My father closed his eyes.
The older officer had already copied the camera picture off Cullen's phone.
"We'll go talk to the owner of the vehicle," he said.
At three in the afternoon he called me back.
I put him on speaker on my father's kitchen table.
"We spoke with Ms. Draper at Mr. Ackerly's residence in East Grand Rapids," he said. "Mr. Ackerly states she was with him there all night. He states her vehicle was in his garage until morning."
