Chapter 32: Thirty-One
On the morning I turned thirty-one, somebody played a fiddle under my bedroom window at a quarter to six.
It was the fiddler from the barn raising.
He was standing on the lawn of the gray cottage in the frost, in a parka, playing "Happy Birthday" very slowly, like a funeral.
Cullen was sitting on the end of the bed, already dressed, holding two coffees.
"Culture," he said.
"It's not even light out."
"He has a second job. This was the only slot."
I put a pillow over my head and laughed into it until I couldn't breathe.
When I came down, there was toast on the counter.
Golden. Even. Not one black edge.
"You bought a new toaster."
"Three settings," Cullen said, very proud. "Bread. Toast. And fire, for emergencies."
At seven my phone buzzed on the counter.
Jarrod.
"Happy birthday, Britt."
That was all.
I looked at it for a while, and then I typed back.
"Thank you."
He'd been at every one of Coby's races since July.
He stood on the shore with his hands empty, and he never once looked at anything but the water.
