Chapter 6: The Funeral Car

Margo took her suitcase back down the stairs without another word, and then she texted me from the street.

Come Saturday, it said. Just us. Gavin will be out all day.

I read it standing in the doorway of the sublet with the peas still melting on my wrist.

Across the hall, Ivy's door was open about two inches.

She said, through the gap, "You're going."

"I'm going to get the rest of my things. And to say it to her face."

"Say what?"

"I don't know yet."

"Take your phone," Ivy said. "Charge it. If it goes badly, text me one word, and I'll come stand in a doorway looking judgmental."

"Which word?"

"Pick one."

I thought about it for most of the night.

I could still feel her thumb on my pulse when I lay down.

At ten on Saturday morning I used the doorbell, since my thumb no longer opened anything.

Margo let me in.

The house was clean and very quiet.

My father's photograph was back on its nail, perfectly straight.

She had made coffee, and she had set out two cups on the kitchen island, the blue ones we'd bought on our honeymoon.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

"You asked."

"I did."

She sat on one stool, and I stayed on my feet by the sink.

"I've been thinking about Thursday," Margo said. "I know I went too far. I do. But you have to understand how it looks from my side. You leave, and you come back, and then it's over. It's what we do."
