Chapter 19: The Night He Stayed
Dixon was already out of the truck and running before Colin got her back to the fence.
He took one look at her face and one look at Colin's, and he took her weight without a word.
She was smiling when he laid her across the back seat, with a red mitten on each hand.
They let her out of the hospital on Monday, the fourth of December.
Colin drove her to the Lund apartment himself, with the heater on high and her hand in his on the gearshift.
Clover had a late shift at the diner.
Dixon had a night run and a bad excuse.
He left a tray of food in the fridge and did not look anyone in the eye.
At the door he said only, "Pain pills are on the counter," and went down the stairs two at a time.
The apartment was quiet.
The radiator ticked.
Colin stood in the small bedroom doorway with his coat still on.
"You don't have to stay," she said.
"I know."
"Do you want to?"
"I haven't wanted anything else since the lake."
She sat on the edge of the bed.
She was nineteen years old, and she had been kissed once, that Friday on the lake path, and she wanted it again.
"Come here," she said.
He crossed the room and knelt on the floor in front of her.
