Chapter 6: Hall Camera
The housekeeper met them at the diner's back door at two o'clock, with her purse held tight against her ribs.
She was out of breath, and her coat was buttoned wrong.
"I took the afternoon off," she said. "I told him my sister was sick. I have forty minutes."
Clover pulled her into the storeroom between the sacks of flour and the stack of paper napkins.
Angie closed the door behind them.
The housekeeper set a phone on a crate and opened an app with a trembling thumb.
"Your father put cameras in the foyer and the hall last year after a delivery went missing," she said. "They save for ninety days. Only the housekeeper has the app, because he doesn't know how to use it."
"You've had this since Wednesday?" Clover said.
"I didn't know if it worked. I was afraid to look at it at home." She swallowed. "I looked this morning."
She pressed play.
The picture was grey and slightly fish-eyed, from high above the front door.
At the bottom of the screen, the stairs.
Angie came down them in her good blue cardigan, carrying the silver music box in both hands.
The timestamp read 6:41 p.m.
A second figure crossed into the frame from the dining room.
Delaney.
She said something, and Angie smiled and held the box out for her to look at.
Delaney took it.
She turned it over with one hand and held it up to the light, admiring it.
Then she walked three steps to the center of the marble.
She looked toward the dining room, where voices were calling that dinner was ready.
She looked back at Angie.
And she opened her hand.
The box fell, bounced once on the stone, and burst apart.
On the screen, Delaney watched it break.
She had a small, bright smile on her mouth, and she was counting something on her fingers.
A second later she lifted both hands to her face and screamed.
