Chapter 19: The Pull
"Don't," Forrest said from the table. "Mara, don't come in."
I came in anyway.
The floor of the room was white tile, and my boots squeaked on it.
Four technicians along the wall watched me with the flat faces of people who had been told to stop seeing.
A drip bag hung over Forrest's head, and a thin amber line ran from it into his arm.
It was nearly empty.
Wherever the amber went, black lines were crawling up his skin again, fast, past his wrist, past his elbow, toward the ring over his heart.
"What is that?" I said.
"Final conditioning." Fenn tilted her head, almost fond.
"A concentrate of Donor D-24's own line, grown in culture. It finishes in minutes what took you three weeks."
"You said six hours."
"I lied, dear. It's a skill you have been slowly learning."
Her eyes dropped to my bare hands.
"You've been quite remarkable, you know.
