Chapter 14: The Oracle Flame

Hesper went to the Council at noon, and I went down.

I left Posy asleep on the healer's table with the cold-mint on her wrists and Biscuit on her pillow.

"Go," the healer said. "I can keep a fever down for an hour. I'm too old to hold it for a day."

Odo walked ahead of me along the guest corridor with his hand on his sword.

We passed the wing where Rosamund was kept, and six guards stood in a row at her door.

Something white slid out under it and stopped against my boot.

A folded sheet of paper.

"Lady Linnea," a voice said through the wood. It was small and rough, as if it had been crying for a day.

I picked the paper up.

"That's for my brother," Rosamund said. "I wrote it in my own hand, with the date."

"Why give it to me?"

"Because he won't believe a word I say to him."

"He'll believe it if it comes from the woman I hurt."

The guards didn't move.

I put the paper inside my sleeve without reading it.
