Chapter 4: The Sheet

On Sunday night a girl from my floor knocked on the door and held out her phone.

"Is this your sister?"

On the screen was a video with a title in pink letters: My Sister's College Expense Sheet Is Killing Me.

The thumbnail was my spreadsheet.

I knew every row of it, because I had typed them.

Three packs of tissues was circled in red.

So was a two-dollar coffee, and the painkillers I'd bought in August, and the pads.

Under them, in Kelsey's cheerful font, was the line: Who even needs this much?

I took the phone from the girl and pressed play.

Kelsey sat on her bed in her ring-light glow, scrolling the sheet with one finger and giggling.

"So my dad has to approve every single thing my half-sister buys," she said to the camera. "And honestly? I get it. Look. Three packs of tissues. Painkillers, like, four times. We love her, but wow."

Her voice was warm and sweet.

It was the voice she used when she said something cruel and wanted to be told she was kind.

I scrolled to the comments with my thumb.

Wait, is she okay?

Your dad is a saint for putting up with this.

Is this your biological sister?

Kelsey had answered that one with a laughing face.

Half-sister, yes. Dad is the only one who can keep her in line.

My own name was not on the video, and my face was not on it either.
