Chapter 6: The Chair

Dean's text came at seven on Monday morning, four words after the hotel lobby: "Settle the household account."

I turned the phone face down in the car and let Hazel's nanny keep the baby for the morning.

The board of Tarrant Freight met on the thirty-first floor of a glass tower in Columbus, at a table with twenty chairs.

Nine directors sat around it with coffee and leather folders.

They had been told there would be an honorary seat and a lunch. They looked at my gray maternity dress and my flat shoes, and one of them looked at his watch.

I looked at Rafe.

He stood at the head of the table and did not sit down.

"Gentlemen, ladies. This is Mrs. Claire Harlan. As of Thursday she holds sixty-two percent of the voting shares of this company."

Nobody spoke.

A pen rolled off the table and I heard it hit the carpet.

"She is also the beneficiary of the Tarrant family trust," Rafe said. "She will chair this board from today."

The oldest director, a heavy man with a gold watch and a very red tie, laughed once through his nose.

"With respect, Rafe. This is a freight company. Not a church bake sale. She was a housewife until last week."

"I kept books for a school district for five years," I said. "Then I was a housewife for six, until three days ago."

"I don't see how that qualifies you."

"It doesn't," I said. "The shares do."

A few people looked down at their folders, and one woman at the far end tried to hide a smile behind her cup.
