Chapter 7: The Fever

Ronan was waiting at the tree line when I came out of the lodge, and he took one look at my face and opened the truck door.

I did not say a word until we were on the highway.

Then I told him everything.

I told him about the name Dunbar, and the fire, and the old man's wet cough.

I told him what the old man had said about Ansel, and the capsule Lorna had set on his tray.

Ronan drove with both hands on the wheel, and he did not speak for two exits.

"Dunbar," he said finally.

"You know it."

"My father was Beta of the Dunbar pack," he said.

I turned in my seat.

"I was thirteen," he said. "He sent me to a cousin's house the night before, to stay with a sick aunt. By the time I got home there was nothing left of the hall but chimneys."

His voice did not change, and his knuckles whitened on the wheel.

"My uncle took me in, and my uncle's pack became Redfern. I've looked for a Dunbar survivor ever since. I've never stopped."

"I'm the survivor?"

"You smell like one," he said, so quietly I barely heard it. "I think that's what my wolf was trying to tell me at the gala. It wasn't only mate."

I looked out at the dark road.
