Chapter 22: Drink It

The chamber was full when I walked in, and the pitcher of water stood at the far end of the long table.

Delfina sat on my mother's left.

King's carrier rested at her feet.

She had brought the cat to the council, because he was old and could not be left alone.

Nobody had stopped her.

I took the chair marked for a struck name, and I did not look at the carrier.

"Nerina Brancato," the elder said. "You answer one accusation. The accusation is that you leaked the Queens warehouse to the police."

"I do," I said. "And I'll show who did."

I put a folder on the table, and Tullio opened it for the room.

"Item one," I said. "The Queens warehouse was emptied the night before the raid. Raimondo's dock camera shows a Brancato car at the north gate at two in the morning."

Tullio held up a photograph, grainy and grey.

A woman in a pale coat stood by an open truck, handing a key to a heavy man.

"That's the Gravesend captain," I said. "And the woman is wearing the coat she's wearing now."

Delfina did not move.

"Item two. The captain."

The side door opened.

Two of Raimondo's men brought in the heavy man with a gold watch, and behind them came his own boss, in the camel coat.

The captain's hands were tied in front of him.

"Say it," the old man said.

"She paid me nothing," the captain said, thick-voiced. "I paid her. A hundred thousand a month, for a year, for every schedule. She came up with the idea. She said her sister was going to ruin everything."

"Which sister?" I asked.

"The new one."

The room made a low sound.

"Item three," I said. "The cat."

I held up the receipt from the boarding clinic.

"King was checked in at ten past six on the night of the banquet and picked up at twenty to one," I said. "The signature is hers. She told this table he made noise as she passed the warehouse. He was in a cage on Staten Island."
