Chapter 13: Seven O'Clock

At seven on Monday morning, every chair at the Farwell Capital boardroom table was full.

The directors had come because a Larkspur summons was not a thing a director ignored.

Cora sat at the foot of the table in a gray suit with her hair pinned up and a thin folder under her hand.

Alexander stood behind her chair.

The white-haired chairman looked at his watch, and then at the empty seat at the head.

"Mr. Farwell is not yet here," he said.

"He will be," Cora said. "He's been invited to his own removal."

A director near the door laughed, and stopped when nobody joined him.

Cora opened the folder.

"Larkspur holds sixty-two percent of this company," she said. "Larkspur's written consent removes three directors as of seven o'clock this morning."

She slid three pages down the table.

"These three are the ones who promised Mr. Farwell a yes on the midnight share issue. Their seats now belong to my nominees."

One of the three stood up, red in the face.

"You can't do this in an hour."

"It took me the weekend," Cora said. "I only waited for Monday."

Three people in dark suits came in and sat in the empty chairs.

At seven fifty, Brooks walked in.

He had not shaved, and the suit he wore was yesterday's.

He stopped inside the door and counted the faces.

Then he saw the strangers in his allies' seats, and a muscle in his jaw jumped.

"What is this?"

"A meeting," the chairman said. "Sit down, Brooks."

He sat at the head of the table.

Behind him the door opened again, and a man in a very good coat came in, carrying a leather folio.
