Chapter 15: The Highest Bidder
I went down in my grandmother's cardigan with the letter folded in the pocket.
Trevor was standing in the middle of the marble lobby, dripping on the rug.
No coat. His good navy suit was soaked black at the shoulders.
He hadn't shaved in days.
The doorman stood behind the front desk with his arms crossed.
Over by the mailboxes, an old woman from the ninth floor was holding a tiny dog in a raincoat. She'd stopped to stare.
"Rebecca." Trevor's face lit up. "You came down."
"You have two minutes."
"Okay. Okay." He pushed his wet hair back. "Your mother's got lawyers. Real ones. She's going to stand up at that memorial on Sunday, in front of the press, and say you were sleeping with Thorpe before the divorce."
"I met him two days after I signed."
"Doesn't matter. She needs a witness." He spread his hands. "Me. The husband. I say you were gone every weekend. I say you were already talking to New York. I say you and the old lady's boy planned it all."
"And she's paying you."
"Fifty thousand."
He took a step closer.
"Pay me a hundred, and I stand up Sunday and say the opposite. I say your mother's a liar. I'm the husband, Rebecca. They'll believe whatever I say."
