Chapter 7: Closing Time

Holden stood inside the door with snow on his shoulders and his hands in his coat pockets.

He looked at the half-lit shop, the stools, the crumbs on the counter I hadn't wiped yet.

"So this is where you've decided to live."

"What do you want?"

"To talk. No lawyers, no mother." He took his hands out of his pockets and spread them. "I came alone."

"You came after closing."

"I came when you were alone."

I kept the counter between us.

He walked the length of the shop and stopped on the other side of it.

"Take the video down," he said. "Tonight. Sign page nine, and I'll give you the penthouse, not the lease in Brooklyn. The penthouse, in your name. Two million in an account. You keep the car."

"And the baby?"

"The baby lives with me, and you'll have her every other weekend, and any holiday you want."

"No."

"Two million, Greta."

"I said no."

His jaw tightened, and I saw it, the small muscle at the hinge.

I had seen it a hundred times across a dinner table and had always found a way to be quiet.

"You don't understand what you're refusing," he said. "You were a Hensley with a pastry certificate and a dead grandfather's recipe tin. I made you a Stroud."

"You made me a housewife."

"I made you safe."

"You made me sign things."

His face went flat and cold.

He leaned over the counter and caught my wrist.

His fingers closed hard enough to hurt.
