Chapter 21: A Hundred and Forty Thousand

Bree did not go quietly, and I was glad.

She went for Brennan first, with her hands out, and the two men in dark jackets caught her by the elbows.

"You owe me," she said. "Brennan, you owe me. I was there when your father died."

"You were there for my father's files," Brennan said.

He was standing very straight, with his hand on the back of his chair.

"You are fired as of this minute. The company will give your forged form to the district attorney on Monday. I'd get a lawyer."

"You can't."

"Watch me."

Around the table, phones had come up.

Mrs. Hartwell held hers at chest height, very steady. Dot's was in her hand, and she did not bother to hide it.

"Dot," I said.

"It's for the archive," Dot said. "Hush."

Bree saw the phones. For a moment she tried to smile at them, soft and wounded.

It didn't work.

Nobody smiled back.

"You," she said to me, as the men turned her toward the hall. Her voice shook. "He'll never love you the way he'd have loved me."

"Probably not," I said.

She blinked.

"He loved you easily," I said. "It took him fourteen months of hard work to love me."

The front door opened and closed.

The house was very quiet.

Edwin sat down again with a grunt and asked, pleasantly, if there was still a slice of that pot roast. Dot cut him two.

It was after eleven when the last car pulled out.

Gail kissed me on both cheeks and told me she was going to sleep for a week. Brennan walked her to her car, and I heard her say, "Happy birthday, darling," and then nothing for a long time.
