Chapter 16: The Driver

The man who drove the van sat in a plain office in Brogan's freight building with a detective across the table.

He was fifty or so, heavy, with a grey crew cut and big scarred hands.

He wore Vera's chauffeur's jacket, because nobody had told him to take it off.

I stood behind the glass with Brogan, and I made myself look at his face.

"Eleven years I drove her," the man said. "Eleven years, and she never once asked my name."

"Tell it from Monday morning," the detective said.

"She rang my phone at twenty past six. She said a woman was going to come out of the Wacker Drive tower and cross the street."

"What did she say to do?"

"Frighten her. That's the word she used." He rubbed his face. "Then she said, no, frighten her until she doesn't get up."

My hand went to my stomach without my deciding it.

Brogan's arm came around my shoulders and held on.

"Where did you get the van?" the detective asked.

"My brother-in-law's yard. I put mud on the plate myself."

"Why did you hit the man instead?"

"I didn't mean to. He pulled her clear." The driver looked at the glass, at the place where we stood, and I thought he could see us. "Mrs. Reeve gave me forty thousand dollars after, in a Foundation envelope. I kept the envelope. I kept her voicemail."

"Why talk to us now?"

"Because she called me Tuesday and said, if it comes out, I'm alone."
