Chapter 14: The Nurse

"Sit," the nurse said.

I sat on an overturned crate of saline bags.

She stayed on her feet by the door.

"Two years ago I worked nights in the emergency department," she said. "A Thursday in October. Around nine, Dr. Wellington walked in through the front doors on her own two legs."

"Walked in."

"She was pale and she had a coat over her arm. She said she had a little bleeding and she'd like to be seen quietly." The nurse's mouth thinned. "I put the bracelet on her wrist myself."

My hand went to my stomach.

"She told the doctor the truth, because you can't lie to a doctor about a bleed. She'd had a procedure that same afternoon at the clinic on Dunmore Street. The doctor checked her, said everything was normal for after, and sent her home in an hour."

"What kind of procedure?"

The nurse looked at me.

"The kind you have at nine weeks when you don't want to be at ten."

The supply room was very quiet.

"Rhys was in surgery that night," I said. "She told him she lost the baby in the emergency room."

"She came to my desk before she left and asked me for the bracelet. She said patients usually keep them." The nurse folded her arms. "I thought it was odd. Then two days later the whole hospital sent flowers to Dr. Wellington on the death of her baby, and I understood what she'd taken it for."
