Chapter 15: The Toast

He didn't throw me out.

That would have been easier.

He only went on standing at the window with his back to me, and said, "Please give me tonight."

I took my coat and the jar of Polish pickles and went to Jody's.

I slept on Jody's couch, and the spring found my hip in the dark.

Rhys did not call on Wednesday.

On Thursday he sent a text that said, "I'm sorry I can't think yet."

On Friday I understood that he would be at the Heart of Milwaukee New Year's Ball on Saturday night.

The Chief of Surgery always was, and so was she.

Jody put on a sequined top that had survived two years of residency and said she was coming as my armed escort.

The ballroom was the same one from August, with the chandeliers and the crab puffs.

I wore a navy maternity dress that Jody had found on a clearance rack.

People looked at my belly before they looked at my face.

I didn't mind.

The hospital's nurses had a long table by the kitchen doors.

The grey-braided nurse sat at the end of it in a plain black dress, with a glass of water and her hands folded.
