Chapter 4: Heartbeat

Bridget held the vitamin bottle up between two fingers.

"Well," she said. "That explains the stairwell."

"Give it back."

"Mother is going to love this."

"Mother," I said, "can read it in the paper when I'm done with her."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You think you're special because the new chief looked at you?"

"I think you've been following me since the elevator."

"I was at the station. Everybody saw him look at you."

She stepped closer and lowered her voice.

"Here's how this goes, Val. You quietly leave the program. You go back to Mother's house and say you're sorry, and you stay in the back room like you always did. And I don't say a word."

I took a long breath.

My whole life I'd taken that breath, and my whole life I'd answered with silence.

I took the bottle out of her hand, slowly, and she let me, because she was so sure.

"No," I said.

"Excuse me?"

"Say it. Go ahead. Walk out of this room and tell the floor."

I held the door open for her.

"I'll stand right here and say the father's name myself, right after you. And then I'll call your mother and ask why her daughter ran to gossip before she asked her sister a single question."

Bridget's freckles stood out against her white face.

"You wouldn't."

"I told the new chief of surgery in a stairwell, Bridget. You think I'm scared of the break room?"

She looked at the open door.

She looked at me.

Then she said, in a small hard voice, "You're going to ruin everything."

"I'm going to have a baby," I said. "You could even be its aunt. Think about it."
