Chapter 15: The Medic's Hands
"Sit down," Thora said.
Dax did not sit.
He stood in front of her with his hands open at his sides, shaking.
"I woke up in the med bay on the second day," he said. "No vial on the tray. No one handing me anything. I lay there and I looked at the ceiling, and it felt like surfacing from deep water."
"Dax."
"I put the feed on the wall screen. I saw you pour out the water. I saw you in the hollow. I saw you cry out when the hound had your arm."
He swallowed.
"And I remembered everything I'd done to you. In the hollow. Before it. Years of it."
"Sit," Thora said again.
This time he did.
He folded onto a rock with his big shoulders curved, and Keir, tied to a tree, looked away.
"Let me see the shoulder," Dax said.
"The Heir bound it."
"The Heir used a coat." His mouth moved in something close to a smile. "Let me see it."
She turned and let him peel back the strips.
His fingers were cold, then warm.
He worked in silence, and she felt each pass of the antiseptic as a sharp, clean sting.
"It's a graze," he said. "But it's deep. It wants closing."
"Then close it."
He drew a curved needle from his pack and threaded it.
His hand was steady on her skin, and his other hand lay flat against her back to hold her still.
The heat of it went all the way through her jacket.
She noticed the pulse beating in the side of his throat.
It was fast, much too fast for a man doing a simple task.
She told herself he was tired.
"There's something I owe you," Dax said, low, to the wound. "I want to say it while my hands are busy."
