Chapter 13: One Page Too Late

Dane's POV

Barron stood at my desk with the frame in both hands.

I had never planned for her to see it.

She had come to return a sweatshirt I had told her to keep, and now she was holding the one thing in this room I could not explain.

"This is my note," she said.

"Yes."

"The liner is from the bakery."

"I know."

She turned the frame over and looked at the back of it.

"You were in the athletic lot that Saturday," she said. "Which car was yours?"

"The black pickup by the light pole."

She breathed out slowly.

"I never found out," she said. "I wondered for two years."

"It was a bad week."

"That's all you're going to say?"

"It's all I can say this morning."

She looked at me for a long moment, and I held still and let her.

It was the first time she had looked at me for that long without a bet in her head.

I did not know where to put my hands.

"The speakers at the tailgate," she said. "You pulled the cord before page two."

"Yes."

"How did you know it was coming?"

That was the question I could not answer in a doorway, with my towel around my neck.

"Ask me tonight," I said. "After the game."

"Tonight."

"I'll tell you everything I can."

She set the frame back on the corner of the desk, exactly where it had been.

She had noticed where it sat, and she had put it back in the same place.

"Okay," she said, and she walked past me into the hall.
