Chapter 18: Lockdown
Pavel didn't say a word about the light.
He leaned against the doorframe and looked at my cuff for about two seconds.
Then he stepped aside to let me pass, and he smiled.
"Mind the step, kid," he said. "It's icy."
I walked out of Torben's house with a pistol in my waistband and my pulse banging in my wrists.
I did not look back.
On Tuesday night the crew came.
It was a quarter past ten.
Bram and I sat in the living room with the lights low, watching a ball game neither of us cared about.
His chief and two guards were downstairs.
A bomb threat had called them to the lobby of the tower twenty minutes earlier.
The lights went out all at once.
Even the glow from the city seemed to dim.
"Power," Bram said.
"Not power."
I was already on my feet with the knife open.
I heard the sound I had been waiting for since Cicero, a soft metal scrape at the terrace door.
"Behind me," I said.
"No."
"Bram."
"I'm not hiding behind my fiancée."
"Then take the hall."
The terrace door burst inward.
Three men came through it in black masks, one after the other.
The hall door banged open behind us, and three more spilled in.
