Chapter 15: Receipts

By Saturday night there were ninety people inside Velvet Hour and a line out the door.

Shawna had called it Mrs. Merrick's Night on a hand-lettered sign, and I had let her, because I was too tired to argue.

Three news crews stood by the lube.

A woman in a yellow raincoat held a lavender rabbit up to her cameraman and said, "No, the ears are the whole point."

I stood behind the counter in the green wrap dress with the brown envelope under the register.

Shawna had scanned both pages that morning.

She had also walked me to a police station on Chicago Avenue.

There a detective with a coffee stain on his tie had read the loan pages twice and said, "Huh."

He told me to bring him the bank records.

I had not called Leon.

I had texted his lawyer.

An hour later the wire receipt for three hundred and eighty thousand dollars arrived in my inbox with no message at all.

At eight-fifteen the door chimed, and the room changed.
