Chapter 16: The Customer
On Monday morning I came in the back way at nine-thirty and found Shawna at the front window with her hand over her mouth.
"Don't look," she said.
I looked.
The line outside Velvet Hour ran past the laundromat and around the corner.
Standing in it, between a woman with a stroller and a teenage boy holding a gift card, was my husband.
He wore the black overcoat and no tie.
He held a paper cup of coffee that he plainly did not want.
"He's been there since six," Shawna said. "The woman with the stroller brought him a donut. He tried to pay her for it."
"Did she let him?"
"She made him say please."
I should have gone upstairs and hidden.
Instead I put on my apron, unlocked the door at ten o'clock on the dot, and let in the first forty customers of the week.
They poured past me.
Leon came in with the sixth person.
He didn't push, and he didn't look for me.
