We did it at the kitchen island, at eight o'clock on Friday night, with the lake going dark outside.
Leon put the contract on the marble between us, all nine pages, with the corner folded where my pen had pressed on page nine.
He had also found a bottle of wine, which neither of us touched.
"You want to go first, or should I?" he said.
"I will."
I turned to the last page and put my finger on my own handwriting.

"I wrote this to win," I said. "That's the truth, and you read it, so you know."
