Chapter 21: The Fiancee

The text came to Katie's phone at nine on Thursday morning, from a number she did not know.

*I was at the gala. I heard it. Come to the donor luncheon at noon. I want you in the room.*

Katie read it twice and handed it to me.

"The fiancee," she said.

"How did she get your number?"

"The women in the pink dresses. They sent her the courthouse video, remember? Their group chat is a small town."

I scrolled up.

There was no name, only a line at the end.

*Tell Reed I'm sorry I clapped.*

I put the phone down.

"It could be a trap."

"It could." Katie pulled on her cleanest scrubs, which were the only clothes she owned that had not smelled of smoke. "I'm going anyway."

"I know."

"You are going to say it's dangerous."

"I'm going to say I'll drive."

She smiled for the first time in a day.

The luncheon was in a private club on High Street, with dark paneling and tall windows and a hundred donors at round tables.

A banner hung behind the head table.
