Chapter 22: Eugenia's Move

"Katherine Carmody," the older detective said again. "I have a warrant for your arrest."

Katie put her fork down.

"On what charge?"

"Forgery of a financial instrument, theft of company records, and extortion."

A murmur went through the club.

The women in pink dresses lifted their phones.

"Extortion," Katie said. "From whom?"

"The complaint was filed this morning by Eugenia Westerfield."

I stood up.

The uniformed officer put a hand out, flat, not rough.

"Sir, please don't."

"She's innocent."

"Then she'll say so, sir. I'm just doing my job."

Katie did not look frightened.

She looked like a woman who had been told the date of her own test.

She took the grocery tote from the back of her chair and held it out to me.

"Hold this," she said.

I took it.

It was empty, and we both knew where the ledger was.

"Friday morning," she said. "Don't you dare postpone."

"Katie."

"I mean it. Whatever happens. You read it, and I'll get there."

Then she turned and offered the detective her wrists.

The click of the cuffs went through the room.
