Chapter 5: He Heard Every Word
Becky did not call Colby back.
She called the unsaved number, and she put it on speaker and set the phone on the glass table between her and Kendrick.
It rang three times.
"Becky." Vanessa's voice came out soft and warm. "I'm so glad you called. I've felt awful."
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere quiet. I needed to think. Becky, I know it looks bad."
"You told Colby you were at the hospital."
"I was upset. I didn't know what I was saying." A small, wet breath. "I panicked and I called the person I trust most. You know how he is with me. I never meant for it to turn into this."
"You texted me at eight this morning," Becky said. "You said you had the flu and you were in bed."
"I did have a headache."
"You were in a wedding gown, a hundred feet from mine."
The line went quiet.
Becky watched Kendrick across the table.
He sat very straight, with one hand flat on the arm of the chair.
When Vanessa spoke again, the softness had gone out of her voice.
"Fine. Is he there? Is Kendrick listening?"
"Say what you want to say."
"I want you to understand something, sweetheart, because I can see you're a nice girl." Vanessa's tone was patient and sharp. "I never loved Kendrick. I'd have been Mrs. Strathmore for two years, long enough to be comfortable. He's a man in a chair with a very good name. Colby is the one I want. I only needed one more year to work out the money."
Becky's hand closed on the edge of the table.
