Chapter 6: What He Signed
I called Emmett from the stockroom, between the heartworm tests and the flea collars.
"Voigt is filing to void us," I said, without hello.
"Who told you that?"
"Cody."
"Cody's a liar."
"He's a liar about eighty percent of the time. I'm trying to find the other twenty."
"I'll be there in twenty minutes," he said. "Don't go anywhere."
"I'm at work."
"I know. I'll sit in the lot."
"You don't have to."
"I know that too."
He did not sit in the lot.
He waited until my shift ended at six and met me at the car with a paper bag from the bakery on the corner.
It held two sandwiches and two coffees.
"I'm going to show you everything I signed," he said. "In order. Then you decide."
"Decide what?"
"If you're still in."
We ate at the long wooden table in his kitchen.
He laid out the folders, and I read them, one at a time, while he washed a pot at the sink.
The first was the trust.
Otto Rausch had died eleven years ago, and he had written a line into the will that said his grandson's shares would pass at thirty-five, "provided he is then married, so that he does not run this brewery alone as I did."
I read that line three times.
The second was a loan agreement for eighteen million dollars.
The bottling plant had burned down three years ago, the same winter Emmett's father had died of a heart attack in the parking lot.
The insurance had paid less than half.
Lyle Voigt had lent them the rest.
"There was no one else," Emmett said, with his back to me. "No bank wanted a brewery with a burned plant."
The third was a short letter with a clause underlined.
"If the parties' children marry on or before October sixteenth and the companies merge, the principal is forgiven in full."
