Chapter 20: The Centennial
Susannah's POV
Three hundred chairs stood on the wharf under strings of bulbs.
The front rows were full of people who had not touched their plates.
I sat at the long head table in the green dress, with Torsten on my right.
The card in front of me read "guest."
Ned stood at the center with a glass in his hand.
Wyatt sat on his left, shaved and shining, and beside him the girl in white looked at the tablecloth.
"A hundred years," Ned said. "A hundred years of honest dealing on this wharf."
Applause rolled down the rows and stopped short at the first ones.
He did not notice.
"Tonight I name the man who'll carry it on."
He turned the glass toward his younger son.
"My boy Wyatt. And the family who'll stand beside him."
He gestured to a stout man at the end of the table.
The man raised his glass and beamed.
Torsten's hand came to rest on my back.
It lay warm and wide between my shoulder blades, through the green silk.
