Chapter 21: The Scale House
I was crying before he got the scale-house door shut.
I did not know when it had started.
Torsten shouldered the door closed on the dark wharf and the empty chairs and the cold wind.
Then he turned, and I was against his chest.
"Sue," he said. "Susannah. I've got you."
"She would have hated it."
"Who?"
"My mother." I wept into his shirt. "She'd have stood at the back with her arms crossed, in her scrubs."
I hiccuped.
"She'd have said, well, somebody had to."
"She sounds like you," he said.
"She'd have been so proud."
"She is," he said into my hair. "She's looking at you right now."
He stood there and held me up while the shaking ran through.
The scale house was dark except for the yellow bulb over the desk.
It smelled of chalk and cold coffee.
On the wall behind the desk, the blackboard still carried the morning's price in Ned's square hand.
I wiped my face on his sleeve.
I looked up at him, and I wanted something that was not words.
"Take it out of me," I said.
"What?"
"This. All of it. I don't want to think. I want you."
He did not ask what I meant.
He put his hands under my arms and lifted me onto the desk.
The papers slid off the other side.
"Lie back."
"No," I said. "Kneel."
His eyes went dark.
He went down on his knees on the plank floor in front of the desk.
I pushed my skirt up around my waist.
He hooked his fingers in my underwear and drew it down my legs, slowly.
He dropped it on the floor beside his knee.
He pushed my thighs wide with both hands.
"Look at you," he said, rough. "You're soaked."
"Hurry."
"No."
He put his mouth on me.
He started soft, with the flat of his tongue, in a long drag.
I cried out and caught the edge of the desk.
He worked me with slow, thorough patience, circling, sucking, letting go.
His tongue slid into me, and his thumb came up to hold my clit.
