Chapter 28: The Keys
Theron didn't reach for the crown.
He looked at it in his brother's hands, gold in the wind off the rim.
Then he looked at me.
"No," he said.
The court along the rim made a sound.
"You'll refuse me," the King said. "Here."
"Here," Theron said. "Where they can all hear it."
He turned so the whole rim could see him, the butcher of the Eastern Pass, with my name healing on his wrists.
"The day I married her, I swore on my wife's name," he said. "For love, and for life."
"I know what you swore."
"A king keeps the Heights first," Theron said. "Before his wife, before himself. That's what the crown is."
He shook his head.
"I'd be forsworn by supper. My hand would go black on my own throne."
Somebody along the rim laughed, short and startled.
The King didn't.
"Then who?" he said, and for the first time he sounded his age. "I've put my only son through that arch."
"You did," Theron said. "So put that back on, brother. You owe it some better years than the last ones."
