Chapter 8: My Mother's Ring

I crossed the frost to the gate before Ismene could get her glove back on.

"Where did you get that?"

She held her hand up to the light and turned it, so the white stone caught the sun.

"Phaedon gave it to me," she said. "It came with the temple. Everything in the chests came with the temple."

"It was my mother's."

"And now it's mine." She smiled. "There's a banquet at the Sun House tonight, for his new command. Come and see it properly, if you can get an invitation."

Then she walked away down the road after Phaedon's banner.

Eudora came up beside me, still wiping her eyes from laughing.

"Call it," she said. "You can call it. I've seen you call it."

"Not here," I said. "Here, only the dogs would see."

Theron had come up behind us.

"We weren't invited," he said.

"I know," I said. "Wear something black."

The Sun House banquet hall had a gold ceiling and a table so long the servants used little carts to get from one end to the other.

We walked in at the second course.

The steward at the door saw Theron and decided not to ask for our names.

The talk died from one end of the table to the other.

Phaedon sat at the head, in white now, with the legion banner hung on the wall behind him.

Four hundred spears had been carried up from the parade ground and stacked in a corner, I noticed.

Ismene sat at his right hand.

My stepmother sat at his left.

There were two empty chairs halfway down.

I took one.

Theron took the other and put his elbows on the table, which nobody in the Sun House had done in a hundred years.

"Sister," Ismene said. "You came."

"I couldn't stay away."

She lifted her hand off the tablecloth, glove gone, and let the lamps find the ring.
