Joan didn't look away from him.
She didn't blink either.
"Be careful, darling," she said. "You're accusing a member of the bar of forgery. In front of thirty witnesses."
"Good," Bram said. "Then they can all come to court."
The board woman closest to her put her napkin on the table.
"Joan," she said quietly. "Is there a release?"
"Of course there is."
"Then show it to them."
Joan turned her head very slowly and looked at the woman she'd sat beside on that board for twenty years.
"Lunch is over," she said.
The board woman stood up, took her coat from the back of her chair, and walked out ahead of us.
On Thames Street that night, Tilly's lawyer called.
He'd already sent the firm a demand for the release.
"If it exists, they have to produce it," he said. "If they produce it, their own insurer will want a handwriting expert to look at it before anybody swears to it."
"And if it's fake?"
"Then their insurer finds out first," he said. "Insurers hate paying for forgeries."
