Dumping My Ex For His Uncle novel · Chapter 5 of 32

Chapter 5: The Record

By midnight the post had four hundred comments.

Half of them were praying for our little girl.

The other half were wondering what I looked like in a bikini.

Someone had already found my company's page and left a review that said "homewrecker captain."

I read every one of them in the window seat.

Then I went upstairs and knocked on Bram's door.

He opened it in a T-shirt and reading glasses, holding a pencil.

The reading glasses threw me for a second.

"You saw it," I said.

"I saw it."

"He's going to send that to the caseworker."

"He already did, probably." He took the glasses off. "So beat him to her."

At eight on Monday morning, before my coffee, I called the county.

I gave the caseworker my new address on Thames Street.

I told her who owned the building before she could ask.

"His uncle," she said slowly.

"His estranged uncle. Who was the only person in that family who opened a door for me when I was standing in the rain."

She wrote it down.

I could hear her pen.

"The home study is in four weeks," she said. "I'll see it then."

At three that afternoon I was in the shop, because Tilly wanted to show Bram her spelling test.

She'd gotten a hundred.

He'd taped it to the mirror behind the first chair, between a photo of a pit bull with a fresh portrait of itself and a sign that said NO DRUNKS NO MINORS NO REFUNDS.

"You're not a minor in here," he told her. "You're staff."

"What's my job?"

"Quality control. Tell me if a crab looks wrong."

There were two customers in the chairs.

A college kid getting his mother's initials on his wrist, and a grandmother getting a hummingbird on her shoulder blade.
