Chapter 6: The Social Worker

Joyce crossed the lobby with both hands held out.

"Darling, you're shaking. Sit down, please. Someone get her a chair."

"I have one," I said.

I stayed standing.

She stopped a few feet from me, and her smile didn't change.

"This is our chief of staff," she said. "And this is the hospital's social worker. I asked them to come, because we are all so worried about you."

Rhonda stepped up beside me.

"She's worried about you," she told the man in the white coat. "She just had a baby in a cabin without heat. Why isn't anyone worried about the man who locked the door?"

"Ma'am," the chief of staff said, "nobody is accusing anyone."

"My sister is. She's accusing him in front of a deputy."

The deputy had gone very still.

Joyce put one hand on her chest.

"Hallie, honey, nobody locked anything. Neil said you were upset, and that you went up the ridge on your own. He was beside himself."

"He carried me up the steps," I said. "And he turned the key from outside. There's a video."

"Is there?" Joyce said gently. "I'd love to see it."

"It's in your account."

"Which one?"

"The cloud account. The one where somebody deleted every clip after eight-forty."

Joyce's face stayed warm and sad.

But her eyes went to Neil, and stayed there a moment too long.

"Oh, sweetheart," she said. "The system has a glitch every winter. You know that. You set it up."

I had set it up.

I also knew that it had no glitch.
