Chapter 16: Write It Ourselves
"I saw the Gate," I said.
I told him, in short flat sentences, while the sea went on beating the rock below.
He listened without moving.
When I was done, he got up, walked to the window, and stood with both hands on the glass.
"That's the ending," he said.
"That's an ending."
"It's the only one the game has."
"There's a third." I pulled the blanket around me and stood up. "The tablet said the twins will. Someone scraped the rest, but the last line survived. Only if the one who can will give."
"Give what?"
"I don't know yet."
"Then how do you plan to write it?"
I came up behind him and put my arms around his waist.
"The log," I said.
I pushed my menu open, and he did the same, and the two pale panels hung in the air between us.
The red line was still there.
ENDING: THE LAST EMBER.
But under it, new letters had appeared, so faint I had to squint.
THIRD ENDING. UNWRITTEN.
And in the corner of the panel, a title I had never seen in all my years of playing.
