Chapter 24: Morning
The Queen Regent gave us the tower.
It stood at the east end of Dawnreach, on the city wall, with a round room at the top and a window facing the sunrise.
By the evening of the day the Gate closed, the whole city had decided it was a holiday.
By the second day, they had decided it would be a feast.
We had stood in the square under a rain of flower petals.
I had shaken hands with four hundred strangers, and Emmett had been kissed on the cheek by an old woman with a basket of eels.
Tavi had rung the Dawn Bell at noon with her grandmother standing beside her, holding the key.
It rang once for each of the fifteen cycles.
Then she let go of the rope and burst into tears, and we all wept with her.
That night, I climbed the tower stairs with a candle in my hand.
Emmett was already in the round room, leaning on the window sill, with his shirt open at the collar.
He turned when he heard me.
"You're late," he said.
"I got stopped by a baker."
