Chapter 13: The Cairn
I was dressed before Ginny got back down the stairs.
Tobin was dressed before me.
"You're not going up there," he said.
"He brought twenty wolves to the line. He wants an audience. He can have one."
We took the two snowmobiles back up the pass road, with Ginny riding behind Tobin.
By the time we reached the last switchback, half the Tamarack was behind us in trucks and on sleds.
I stopped at the switchback and got off.
"Wait here," I said.
"No," said Ginny.
"He wants me to bring an army. Then it's a fight, and fights are his." I looked at Tobin. "Let me walk up alone."
Tobin's jaw worked.
Then he nodded once and put his hand on his sister's arm.
The last two hundred yards were deep snow, and I walked them.
The bond pulled so hard it felt like a rope tied under my ribs.
Every step up was a step toward him, and my body loved it, and I hated my body for it.
Roman stood on the Montana side of the cairn in a black parka.
His wolves stood in a line behind him, all in Dark Moon patrol jackets.
