Chapter 16: The Trade
"Let me talk to him," I said.
"He's busy." Roman laughed. "He's sitting very still. Silver does that."
"Then no page."
A pause.
Somewhere on the summit, a woman called his name, bright and impatient.
Then a door shut on Roman's end, and I heard boots on stone stairs.
A lock.
"Marlow." Tobin's voice, rough and close. "Don't."
"Are you hurt?"
"Radiator's fine," he said.
Roman took the phone back.
"Ten tonight," he said. "The boiler room. You come alone, with the page. You walk out with him. Bring anybody else and he stays till the Moot."
He hung up.
I sat on the snowmobile at the cairn with the phone in my lap.
The snowmaker didn't say anything.
He'd been a Dark Moon wolf for twelve years.
He knew what silver did.
"Drive me down," I said. "I have to do something first."
At four o'clock I sat at Ginny's kitchen table with her laptop and the cherry oilcloth under my elbows.
The elders' reply had a Council address at the bottom, for answers to the charge.
I typed the three elders' names into the email.
