Chapter 24: The Cairn in Summer
"Okay," I said.
I took the keys out of his hand.
He let me.
We drove his truck up the pass road with the windows down.
In December it had taken a snowcat four hours.
In June it took a pickup forty minutes, rattling over dry ruts and the gravel where the slide had been.
Wildflowers grew up through the old debris, yellow and purple.
Tobin didn't say a word the whole way.
He kept one hand in the pocket of my old parka.
The one I'd thrown him in the cat, the night I let him out.
He'd never given it back.
I'd never asked.
At the top, I parked beside the cairn and turned off the engine.
The night was warm and enormous.
The stars were out over the ridge, and a thin moon hung low in the west.
Behind us, down in the dark, the lights of Dark Moon Lodge.
In front of us, the long valley down to Larch Creek.
We got out.
Tobin walked up to the cairn and put his hand flat on the black stones, the way the waitress had in February.
