Chapter 13: The Lie
I walked out of my mother's garage and into her backyard, because I couldn't stand in a room with him.
It was two in the morning, and the grass was wet through my socks.
Abel came out after me and stopped by the clothesline.
He didn't come closer.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"Whatever you've been rehearsing for six years."
"I haven't rehearsed it," he said. "Every time I tried, I heard how it would sound."
"It sounds like someone who stood in a control room and watched me get fired."
His face didn't change.
"You stood there, Abel. Dax slid that letter across the board and you looked at your shoes."
"Yes."
"You carried my notebooks to the step and went back inside."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because if I'd carried them to your car, Gil would have known I was on your side. He'd have had me out of the building by lunch."
"And then?"
"And then nobody is left in that building who can get you the first album's drive."
I laughed, and it came out ugly.
"You did that for me?"
"I did it for the drive. I did the other thing because I'm a coward."
That stopped me for a moment.
He said it plainly, and he didn't look away.
I pushed both hands against his chest, and he let me shove him back a step.
"Tell me how it started," I said. "All of it. Don't skip the part that makes you look bad."
He took a breath.
"The week before the first album sessions, Dax threw his voice out. He was in the booth at three in the morning, and something tore, and he came out with blood on his handkerchief."
