Chapter 15: The Club
Hayes drove.
He didn't ask whether I was sure.
He put the truck through two yellow lights and parked half on the curb outside Adele's club on Benefit Street, a brick house with brass door handles and a doorman who had never once looked at me.
Tonight he looked at me and held the door.
The dining room was full of women in good linen.
Nobody was eating.
They stood in a loose ring around a table by the window, and in the middle of the ring Adele lay on the carpet with her cream cardigan open and her pearls tilted across her neck.
Two paramedics knelt beside her.
One had a blood pressure cuff in his hand and the other was talking too loudly.
"Mrs. Ames, can you tell me your date of birth?"
Adele's lips moved.
Her face was the color of candle wax.
Teddy stood against the wall with his hands over his mouth.
When he saw me he nearly folded in half.
"She said her stomach hurt, and then she just went down," he said.
"I was at the next table."
"I thought she was being dramatic."
"She wasn't," I said.
