Chapter 21: The Vote

At eight fifty-eight, the doors of the boardroom on forty opened, and I walked in with my mother.

Vicki had signed her out of Maple Court at seven, with a wheelchair van.

Nolan's attorney had sent a letter saying the bill was paid.

She pushed the chair herself, in her best cardigan, grinning at the room.

My mother sat very upright with her Bible in her lap and her shaking hand held down by the other.

Nolan walked on my other side, with a gray folder under his arm.

Nine board members sat around the long table.

Lionel was at the head, with Imogen at his elbow and a blank place in front of her.

Imogen's father sat halfway down, with his hands folded and his eyes on me.

"This is a closed session," Lionel said, pleasantly. "I don't believe Mrs. Tunstall is a director."

"She isn't," said Nolan's attorney, behind us.

Nolan's attorney stepped forward with her folder.

"She is a trustee of the Collins and Son Family Trust, which holds eighteen percent of this company. Under your articles, a holder of ten percent may address any meeting."

Lionel's smile held.

"Then she may address it for five minutes."

I took the chair at the foot of the table that someone pulled out for me.

My mother's wheelchair came alongside.

I put my hand on the table, the one with the ring on it, so that every person there could see it.

"My name is Avery Tunstall," I said. "My maiden name is Collins."

My voice held.

"My father built Harbor Point Tower for this company. He finished it, and he was never paid."

I opened Nolan's folder and slid a printed page down the table.
