Chapter 8: Two A.M.

Nolan's POV

I stood on the sidewalk on Lawndale at eleven at night and looked up at one lit window on the third floor.

I had been standing there for twenty minutes.

I knew that Avery was inside.

I knew she had left me in the dark at two that morning with her shoes in her hand, and that she had every right to.

The window slid open.

A head of red curls leaned out, and a voice floated down.

"If you are the man I think you are, I have a stapler," Vicki Hatcher said.

"I'm not going to come up," I said.

"That is very smart of you."

"I wanted to see the light on."

"Well, it's on. Goodnight."

"Vicki."

She stopped with her hand on the sash.

"She told me," Vicki said. "Everything. Four months, the courthouse, the ring on a chain. I made her say it twice, and then I wanted to throw up in your lobby."

"That's fair."

"You told a pregnant woman to go back to her desk, Mr. Tunstall."

I had been hearing that sentence in my head for four days.

"I did," I said.

"Why?"

I had an answer, and it was a good one.

If I had claimed her at that table, my father would have heard before the coffee cooled.

He would have used her to take the vote, and Avery would have paid for it first.

All of that was true, and none of it was the answer to the question.

"Because I was a coward," I said. "For a single moment. It cost me more than the four months did."
