Chapter 11: Her

"Documentation," my mother said from Arizona. "Of what, exactly?"

"Of the fact that Cal and I aren't related, Mom. The hospital board wants paper."

"Oh, honey."

She was quiet a moment, and I heard a dog barking behind her, and her new husband's television.

"We never adopted him," she said. "Your father tried twice, and the state said it would take his mother's family signing off, and they wouldn't answer. He was furious."

"Is there anything else? Anything with a date on it?"

"Your father made a video. The day Cal came to us. It's on that old iPad of his."

"The one in his desk?"

"No, Walter gave it to Cal when he left for Alaska. Said he'd want something to read in the cold."

I looked up at the loft.

"I'll find it," I said.

Cal was on a double shift, and the house was empty and smelled of cedar and coffee.

I climbed the loft stairs in my socks.

I had only ever been up there in the dark, and I had never looked at anything but him.

His bed was made.

The nightstand drawer held a flashlight, a paperback, an unopened pack of gum, and under the paperback a flat black tablet with a cracked corner.

My father's iPad.

I plugged it into the charger by the lamp and sat on the edge of the bed while it woke up.

The passcode was my birthday, which was exactly what my father would have picked.
