Chapter 12: Read Aloud

He came in at six in the morning with his bag on his shoulder and stopped dead in the kitchen doorway.

I was sitting at the table with the iPad in front of me and a cold cup of tea.

I had been there since noon the day before, and I knew every line.

"You went upstairs," he said.

"I was looking for a video of my father."

"Did you find it?"

"I found that, and then I found this."

I turned the screen so he could see the title.

His face did not change, but his bag slid off his shoulder onto the floor.

"I'm going to read you something," I said. "Sit down, Cal."

He sat across from me, very straight.

I cleared my throat and read.

"The night of the rehearsal dinner. 'I wrote a toast on an index card. I was going to stand up in front of the Aldriches and the whole club and say her name. I was going to walk her out and never let anyone call me anything again.'"

"'Then Haley stood up. And I saw her face, and I sat there and let her finish.'"

"Clarissa," Cal said.

"'I put my hand over the card so nobody would see that I'd written it.'"

I looked up.

"Where's the card?"

He reached into his jacket, which was hanging on the chair behind him, and took out a small index card folded to the size of a stamp.

It was soft along the creases from a week of handling.
