Chapter 27: The Taunt
"At dawn," I said. "That's hours from now."
"Yes."
"You walked in here with your pack on your shoulder to tell me that."
He nodded once.
I sat up in the iron bed with my marked hand burning in my lap.
"Why?"
He set the pack down on the floor and straightened, and he gave me his answer slowly, so I would not miss a word.
"Your terms," he said. "No mark. No mate bond. No promises past the night."
"That was before."
"It was your rule. I kept it."
"Elias."
"You wear the Alpha's mark now, so you're sealed to this border for as long as you live."
His mouth went tight.
"I don't stay where a woman is going to die on a stone, and call it love. I've read how it ends."
"It isn't the same."
"Tell me how it's different."
"My mother didn't choose it out loud. I did."
"Your mother wrote 'willingly,'" he said. "I read it. She chose it too."
That hit me in the ribs, because it was true.
I got out of the bed.
I crossed the room barefoot in my shirt and stopped an arm's length from him.
"You think I'll bleed for them until there's nothing left," I said. "And you can't watch it."
"I can't."
"So you'll leave first. That's your whole plan."
"My terms were the same as yours," he said, and for the first time his voice cracked in a way I could see. "No promises past the night. It's morning soon, Bryn. I'm only keeping my word."
He was throwing it back at me.
He had been saving it for days, and he had picked the moment I could least stand.
My eyes stung.
"Stay anyway," I said.
He did not move.
"I'm not asking as your Alpha."
